Abstract

Nanosilica (NS) was synthesized using the sol-gel method, with tetraetylortosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor, ammonia (NH3) as a base catalyst, water as hydrolysis and ethanol as solvent. Polyvinyl alcohol is added to the sol solution, acting as a capping agent. The purpose of this study was to determine the average particle size, morphology and nanosilica particle size distribution of TEOS by adding variations in the concentration of PVA and without the addition of variations in the concentration of PVA. The particle size and particle morphology were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The distribution of NS particles was analyzed using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). The average size of control NS particles (55.55 µm), NS + PVA 5% (39.22 µm), NS + PVA 10% (41.13 µm), and NS + PVA 15% (40.26 µm) . The morphology obtained is shaped like amorphous. The narrow particle size distribution is NS + PVA 5%, compared to other samples. KEYWORDS : nanosilica; PVA; sol-gel method; TEOS
